My lessons and classes are presented in English. I use the English immersion approach. The guidelines I provide to my in-person group classes (found below) may be helpful to any learner preparing for an English-language learning environment.
In class, we will speak and write in English. This means that when we are learning together, please try your best to use ONLY English.
Why English Only?
Everyone Can Understand: English is the language we are using to learn. If we all speak English, everyone can understand what we are saying.
Good Practice: Speaking English in class helps you learn and improve your speaking and listening skills. It's like practicing a sport!
Fair for Everyone: If some people speak other languages, students who don't know those languages might feel left out. Using only English makes it fair for everyone.
Helps You Learn Faster: When we focus on one language, it's easier to understand the lessons and talk about them.
Important Things to Remember:
Speak English in class, even if you’re slow, scared, and make mistakes. That’s okay. It’s why we are in class—to learn and practice English.
Try your best!
It's okay to be quiet: Sometimes it's good to be silent and listen. You can learn a lot by just hearing English. You don't always have to speak.
Take your time: It's okay to take your time to think before you speak in English. You don't need to answer right away. Think about what you want to say.
Mistakes are okay! Everyone makes mistakes when they are learning. It's okay to make mistakes when you speak English. That's how you learn and get better. We are here to help each other.
Ask for help in English. If you don't understand something, please ask me. I will help you. If you need help in your native language, that is okay. There are many translation resources available. Please practice translating and repeating the information in English.
Special Reminders:
It’s okay if you’re slow, get things wrong, don’t pronounce something perfectly, and/or can’t remember everything you hear or learn the first time you hear or learn it. That’s normal! Practice and repetition in class and using the language outside of class whenever possible will help.
Don't be afraid to ask! If you don't know a word in English, try your best to explain or ask, "How do you say...?” If you don’t know how to spell a word, you can ask, “How do you spell that word?” or say, “Please spell it.” If you need someone to speak more slowly, you can say, “Please slow down.” or, “I don’t understand, not so fast, please.”
Remember, outside of class and/or during a class break, you can speak any language you want! However, practicing English outside of class, especially listening to different voices and accents and speaking with new people, will help you become fluent faster.
We are all here to learn together. Using English in class will help everyone learn and improve. Thank you for helping make our class a good place to learn English.
